What is Blues music?

Blues music is a genre that has its origins in the deep south of the USA. African-American settlers fused the spiritual work songs and field hollers with the sounds of jazz, swing and rhythm & blues.

Through the years the history of the blues has undergone many changes and many sub-genres have appeared, Jump, Chicago, and Delta being the most well known. The electrification of instruments and the influence of rock & roll in the late 50’s saw the blues reach a new, larger, audience circling the entire globe.

The characteristic form of the blues music a cyclical musical chord progression accompanied by a 'walking' bass, a shuffle drum pattern and soulful guitar.

The lyrical content often cover the tale of lost love and a longing for love.

The Blues as a genre has seen the creation of numerous now legendary performers whose names will be quoted and whose songs will be played forever. Names include Leadbelly, Howlin' Wolf, BB King, John Lee Hooker, John Mayall, Johnny Winter, Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
