What is Hip-Hop music?

Hip-Hop originating from the Bronx in New York and is a form of music expression which forms part of the Hip-Hop subculture of MC-ing, DJ-ing and graffiti writing.

Hip-Hop originally started with party DJ’s making improvisations over existing music. It wasn’t until 1979 that musicians started to record original material, with the most widely accepted first Hip-Hop song being “Rapper’s Delight” by The Sugarhill Gang.

The genre was quickly embraced as a key influencer in youth culture throughout the US with rival east and west coast camps giving birth to the era of Gangsta Rap and Underground Hip-Hop. It was not all plain sailing for the Hip-Hop movement due to the belief that the genre delivered an anti-establishment message and attitude. Explicit lyrical content and the nature of the often violent subject matter resulted in many artists encountering heavy censorship.
