What is classical music?

Classical music covers a broad range of music covering opera, symphonies, choral and chamber music requiring a full orchestra to perform the piece. However this is not always the case, the sting quartet is as popular and valid today as it always was and the pieces of music played fit perfectly under the classical umbrella.

As opposed to the more form of popular music which is more song based classical music follows a more complex form of music as in sonatas and symphonies.

Although the term ‘classical music’ did not appear until early in the 20th century the style of music it refers to has been in existence for 700 years.

Classical music is all around us seeping into popular consciousness, some of the major works by the great composers of the 18th & 19th centuries have influenced musicians from all music genres and becoming the backbone of many pieces of popular music. The longevity of some composers is testament to the quality of the music written that they are still being performed today.
