What's wrong with the old fashioned way?

Find musicians to collaborate with - it sounds easy, but it can be a long and difficult task. When you start a band or join a band, you will be forgiven for thinking that it’s almost impossible to find musicians with the right attitude, the right ability, the right gear, the right age, the right availability in the right genre - all in the right place!

Sourcing musicians for your studio recording can be just as difficult. To achieve a pro recording you have to make a band work - you need the right band mix. Countless sessions have not achieved their full potential simply because members of the band wanted different things - musicians wanted their own vision fulfilled.

Of course, when you’re looking for a band it’s hard enough to find a band, but bands looking for you are having the same problems!

The music industry has always suffered these problems - until now

Having an imperfect bandmix would seem to be ‘just the way it is’ with careers in music...but not any longer...
Whether you are starting a band or want to join a band, Musical Exchanges’ ground-breaking MX Recruit is for you. Discovering local bands, aiming for a professional recording career or trying to find a player available for a one-off gig it couldn't be easier!
And don’t forget - your own ad in Musical Exchanges' MX Recruit means that a band looking for you has a much better chance of finding you.

Live music in The Midlands

The Midlands area has always been of huge importance to the British Music Scene, it is believed to be the birthplace of Heavy Metal. Bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, from the industrial areas of Birmingham and Wolverhampton, used their environment as an influence for their musical output and the new genre was born, to be copied by hundreds of bands around the world.

In the 60’s every pub, bar, youth club, church and community hall seemed to be putting on live bands and their was no shortage of groups to perform often with several bands on the bill each night. It was not unusual for a band to play a gig at one venue and then travel to a club for a late night gig in a night club.

The public were treated to some great music and the energy of the area was mirrored around the Country. The 60’s was a great time of musical invention and experimentation in the Midlands, so many of the beat groups of the time spawned copycats up and down the Country.

The 60’s gave us some memorable acts from all over the area, some of the notable Midlands bands of the time were; The Move, The Rockin’ Berries, The Spencer Davis Group, The Applejacks, The Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin and The Fortunes.

As the 60’s gave way to the 70’s a change began to take place in not only society but also the music that was being made. The peace & love era was replaced more a more knowledgable and aggressive society with the rock music now being heavy, progressive and then punk. The 70’s did have a lighter side, the Glam rock music of the time was upbeat and happy with the performers wearing bright, outrageous costumes and the use of make up and face paint was common place.

A selection of 70’s bands from the Midlands that found a wider national and international fame were; Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Slade, Wizzard, Electric Light Orchestra, Mud, Traffic, Showaddywaddy and The Steve Gibbons Band.

As Punk music fizzled out by the end of the 70’s and the guitar driven bands becoming uncool and not fashionable and with a the technological advances being made in electronic instruments the age of the synthesiser took over and for decade dance and electronic pop music ruled the air waves. The New Romantic movement was dominant in the charts. However for a short time the emergence of Ska music provided an energetic dance fueled explosion and for a while the 2 Tone record label, based in Coventry could do no wrong.

Some of the 80’s bands, from the Midlands, who struck gold and found huge global success were,  UB40, Dexys Midnight Runners, Duran Duran, Stephen ‘Tin tin’ Duffy, The Specials, The Selector, The Beat, Fine Young Cannibals, Joan Armatrading and Ozzy Osborne.

From the early 90’s to the present day the return of the guitar driven pop and rock music was seen by many to be a welcome return and an antidote to the synthetic and manufactured pop of the 80’s. The Indie bands that formed around this time often went back to basics and made no excuses for referencing and being heavily influenced by bands from the 60’s. The music buying public were demanding a more varied choice and that is what was delivered.

The changes in the ways music is listened to has changed, the days of the big recording contract no longer the norm, the result musicians had to find a way of making money and the successful bands had to find a way to continue making money. The result was a return to performing live and touring. With records sales on a steady decline in the Midlands and the world as a whole, the live arena became the way a musician could earn money. This is backed up by a music industry statistic that states in 2010 money generated from live performances was greater than that generated from record sales, this was the first time that this had occurred.

Amongst the bands and artists from the Midlands area who found success in the 90‘s and beyond were; Jamelia, The Streets, Beverley Knight, The Enemy, Ocean Colour Scene, Editors and Robbie Williams
